I had the pleasure of working with my friend and former F1 superstar David Coulthard at his DTM test in Monte Blanco, Spain last week. It was the first time since the end of 2004 (when we were both at McLaren) that we have worked together at a race track.
DC was the first Formula 1 Race Driver I worked with and as I mentioned in previous blogs, he set the benchmark for any driver I worked with since in terms of professionalism, fitness and generally the way he conducts himself on and off the track. He also has an irreverent sense of human which cracks me up at times. Usually the ‘wrong’ times.
It was the first time David had been in a racing car seriously since 2008. He did an excellant job in a formula he has never driven before. The DTM car is a monster but the Mercedes guys were impressed by DC’s pace and how he adapted to it. One example, in an F1 car you always have the tyres as a visual reference, but in the DTM the tyres are enclosed and you cannot see them, so negociating corners is another story here.
Not sure if the DTM is going anywhere for DC as he has tremendous commitments elsewhere. Anyway, great to work with the big man again as always.
