Reigning MCLAREN- AUTOSPORT YOUNG DRIVER OF THE YEAR, Dean Smith, had a strong start to his debut GP3 season in Barcelona, Spain this weekend.

Dean finished 4th and 5th respectively in the two races. The brand new GP3 series contains a very strong and competitive field and forms part of  the support for the European- based Formula 1 races.

Dean began working with me in 2009, the year he became Formula Renault Champion. He has worked tremendously hard on his Strength and Conditioning over the Winter and has added several kilos of muscle to his body to cope with the increased physical demands of the high-powered series.

Dean has obvious talent and seems to cope very well with adapting to different cars. He has also had to do things the hard way, often struggling to fund his racing career at times. However, he is a tough customer and winning the prestigous young driver award last season has rightly put him in the limelight where he belongs. He has my admiration as he deals fantastically with his race career, training, running the family business and being a new father at 21 years old. He is unique in being able to balance this all out and do a great job with it all. I have tremendous respect for him.

Dean’s next race is at Turkey at the end of May. I will keep you posted on how his season progresses.

All the best.
